DESCRIPTION: APW - Effingham Embree, New York, verge fusee doctor's watch with center-seconds and hacking feature, 58mm, gilt OF original pair cases, inner with casemaker's incuse "I B" marking, the outer containing paper for clock and watchmaker George Solliday of Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania, white enamel dial with upper timekeeping register, hacking slide outside dial at 8-seconds, center sweep-seconds with hand sharply arched for clearance above setting arbor, KWKS, verge escapement, diamond endstone, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock having a bird of prey at its neck, s#729 with nearby s#727 within inner case. Comes with a small chain with two keys attached. Effingham Embree was born in 1759 and was in business on his own in New York from 1789 to 1795 during which period the present watch was presumably made. After 1795 he relocated to Long Island and sold his New York business to Stephen Van Wyck. Selections from the collection of Tom McIntyre. CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good stop/start function, fine-plus cosmetic mvt condition overall, plates with some scratches and fine scratches; dial with patched chip below hour and minute hand, some light hls radiating outwad from this point; fine hands; outer case shows ample wear, few slight dings at perimeter, virtually no gilt finish remaining, button latch good; inner case with some excess play at mvt and bezel hinge, some marring to inner lip at bottom adjacent release latch, case shows ample wear, no exterior gilt finish remaining, repair evident to pendant junction with solder excess visible internally; bow pivots freely; good domed glass bull's-eye crystal.
